Biography

Artūras Chalikovas

I was born on October 3, 1967 in Siauliai. My father, a professional musician who played guitar, percussion and piano, introduced me to music at a very young age. I began playing the violin at four; was admitted to music schoolwhere I began studying pianoat five, then began guitar lessons at the age of six. I recall that at the time, my father used to make me listen to jazz. My music studies came to an end when I was 7, when it was discovered that I was the best mathematician in my school. I began to win Olympiad competitions in mathematics, and I dreamed of becoming a mathematician or physicist when I grew up. In 7th grade, however, my interest in music was rekindled, and I formed a band. By the age of fifteen I had already begun playing in one Siauliai restaurant. At seventeen, I entered a guitar class in the Stage Department of the Klaipeda Faculty of the Lithuanian Academy but left it to begin army service after one year. In the army, I formed a band as well. We played various kinds of music year round. Those days I often listened to George Benson and Chick Corea. After my army service I quit my studies in the academy for good. I then settled in Silute, where I played in a band called “Alternatyva”. That was when my career as a teacher began. I later moved to Klaipeda, where I worked as a guitar teacher, played in a restaurant called "Meridianas” and worked in a studio creating recordings for singers. I also began taking private composition classes with a composer named Alvidas Remesa. Those days I listened to contemporary classical music a lot and was preparing to enter the Lithuanian Music Academy in Vilnius, where I wanted to study composition.  The composer Osvaldas Balakauskas was very impressed by my compositions. In Klaipeda I met the pianist Egidijus Buožis, with whom I started playing jazz. Later, I played in the Algis Kilys quintet. I came to Vilnius in 1992, where I established a private guitar school by the name of “Glorija”. Some years later my future wife came to study there. Now I have been married for 12 years and have a wonderful wife and three children. I work at my guitar school, play jazz, and compose and play music.
